SULI mentor’s project awarded DOE TCF funds
Three Berkeley Lab projects were awarded more than $2 million from the DOE’s Technology Commercialization Fund (TCF) to further collaborative research and development with industry partners on radioactivity detecting technology, next generation electrodes for electrolysis of water, and high performance sustainable aviation fuel. One of these teams is headed by Eric Sundstrom, a SULI mentor.
WD&E mentors teach new course
This article profiles the Advanced Bioprocess Engineering Laboratory, a new capstone course in the program taught by WD&E mentor Jay Keasling. The course prepares students for careers in the biopharmaceutical, industrial biotech, or food tech industries by giving them much-needed hands-on experience with bioprocessing equipment. Berkeley Lab’s next supercomputer will be an HPE Cray system named “Perlmutter” in honor of Saul Perlmutter, an astrophysicist at Berkeley Lab who shared the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics for his contributions to research showing that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. A group of scientists who study the interactions between plants and microbes have released a new study detailing the dynamic relationships between soil-dwelling protists and developing plants, demonstrating that soil protists respond to plant signals much like bacteria do. Researchers in the Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology (EGSB) and Biological Systems and Engineering (BSE) Divisions at Berkeley Lab employed a large-scale functional genomics approach to systematically characterize Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, a beneficial bacterium prevalent in the human gut. Additional Biosciences Area contributors to this work include project scientist and SULI mentor Valentine Trotter in EGSB.

Congratulations to SULI mentor, Dani Ushizima
Daniela Ushizima, a staff scientist in the Computational Research Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, is among 25 female scientists honored by 3M Latin America for innovative research. Ushizima was one of six winners representing Brazil. She served as a SULI mentor in 2013 and 2019.
