October 12 – 13, 2022
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley CA
Workforce Development & Education (WD&E) is delighted to host our first-ever VFP Preparatory Workshop, with funding from the Department of Energy. On October 12 and 13, selected guests are invited to attend a two-day workshop hosted at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) that will prepare them to apply proposals for the WDTS’ Visiting Faculty Program (VFP).
This workshop will provide:
- Presentations on current DOE research projects
- Guided tours of Laboratory facilities
- Talks from previous VFP faculty participants
- Professional networking with LBNL researchers across STEM disciplines
- Early-stage development of a proposal aligned with the guidelines for VFP
Research experiences can increase faculty knowledge in their STEM field of study and create authentic connections between course content and real-world applications. However, faculty members at non-research-intensive colleges and universities may have less access to research opportunities, funding, administrative support, research tools, and specialized research facilities. By engaging faculty in WDTS programming, we increase the chances that students at their colleges and universities will be encouraged and supported to participate in the CCI, SULI, and VFP programs. In this way, we will contribute to the future STEM workforce by increasing the number of students who apply to internship programs at Berkeley Lab or other DOE laboratories.
Key Dates
- VFP Applications are due on January 10, 2023, 5:00 PM ET
- Summer Term runs from June 5 until August 11, 2023 (10-week term)
Funding
WD&E will cover the cost of travel to and from Berkeley Lab and two nights of lodging at the Berkeley Lab Guest House (single occupancy) for faculty members accepted as workshop participants. Meals will be provided while the workshop is in session.
Audience
Faculty members at accredited U.S. degree granting, postsecondary institutions of higher education that are historically underrepresented in the U.S. research community.
Program Benefits
Accepted participants will be provided with support that enables them to collaborate with LBNL researchers in the development of a proposal of mutual interest, per the VFP guidelines. Additionally, they will hear talks from previous VFP faculty participants and be able to professionally network with LBNL researchers across STEM disciplines.
