Where will you be in Summer 2022?
You and two of your students could be working on a collaborative research project with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) scientists, fully supported through the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Visiting Faculty Program. Berkeley Lab is a member of the national laboratory system supported by the DOE Office of Science and managed by the University of California (UC).
The Visiting Faculty Program (VFP) is a summer professional development program for current faculty. Come meet scientists at the DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) and learn more about their research goals and current projects. Work together to submit a research project proposal on environmental genomics and large-scale data analyses with energy and environmental applications.
Selected interns are fully supported. Their projects will receive stipend and travel expenses, both for faculty members and students who participate.
The JGI is a national user facility located at Berkeley Lab in Berkeley, Calif. It is the only large-scale genome sequencing and analysis facility focused solely on the genomes of non-medical microbes, microbial communities, plants, fungi, algae and other targets relevant to DOE missions in energy, environmental biology, and global carbon and other nutrient cycling.
You’re invited to meet JGI researchers and discuss possible VFP summer project proposals.
-
Hear JGI researchers talk about their projects
-
Network one-on-one in ‘breakout’ sessions
-
Ask JGI and WD&E staff questions about the VFP program

This summer experience was just what people in my position at smaller, undergraduate institutions that are not primarily focused on research need to be able to continue our high-level scholarship and make significant contributions to science. – Frank Yip, California State University, Maritime Academy
From this [experience], I hope to successfully submit several papers in highly rated peer reviewed journals. – Isabelle Kemajou-Brown, Morgan State University
VFP applications open on October 19, 2021
Completed VFP applications are due on January 12, 2022
A national user facility at Berkeley Lab in Berkeley, Calif., the JGI is the only large-scale genomic science user facility dedicated to enabling researchers to efficiently conduct analyses of microbes, microbial communities, plants, fungi, algae and other targets relevant to DOE missions in energy, environmental biology, and global carbon and other nutrient cycling.
All VFP internships are facilitated by the Workforce Development and Education Department (WD&E). WD&E facilitates internships and career advancement opportunities at Berkeley Lab. They use Berkeley Lab’s resources to inspire and prepare the next generation of scientists, engineers, technologists, and STEM professionals. They promote equal access to scientific and technical careers for students from diverse backgrounds and support excellence in science and engineering teaching.
