With over 1.8 million listings nationwide, Apartmentlist.com is a wonderful free resource to help find housing. Apartmentlist.com offers the world’s first apartment-matching engine. Each city on the website is broken down into neighborhoods, highlighting pricing, noise level, nearby attractions, restaurants, shopping, etc.
Walk Score
Walk Score is an apartment searching website that focuses on convenience. For every apartment in the area, Walk Score gives the apartment a rating from 0 to 100 based on how close the apartment is to places of work, restaurants, grocery stores, etc. The website also provides a score from 0 to 100 based on how convenient public transportation and bikes are for trips around town and for popular areas.
Cal Rentals
Cal Rentals is a service that offers rental listings to aid in your housing search for a small fee ($20-25). Students who subscribe to Cal Rentals services may obtain updates online. They have a Summer Housing Bulletin which can be requested via email. See the Summer visitors link at: https://calrentals.housing.berkeley.edu
Craigslist
If you are looking for something, anything, chances are you can find it on Craigslist online classified ads. The ads are free to browse, and often free to post (housing listings are free,) making it readily accessible to everyone with internet. This site helps you get in touch with people looking for roommates, subletters, and summer renters, and is the best place to find private rooms and apartments to rent for the summer. It also allows you to advertise yourself in the “Housing Wanted” section, which we highly recommend. (You could have people e-mailing you asking you to live with them!)
To look for housing, click on the Housing link, and be sure to select the East Bay category at the top of the page for housing near Berkeley. There are other sorting options that allow you to sort by rent, type of house/apt., neighborhood (we recommend Berkeley), and so on.
HotPads Berkeley
Hotpads is a map-based apartment and rental home search engine, listing homes for rent, apartments, condos and real estate.
My Apartment Map
My Apartment Map is an apartment search engine that allows users to find apartment listings all over the United States. Searchers can view pictures, maps, rental data, find deals, post rentals and contact property owners. My Apartment Map also has specific search features for college students, pet owners, and military families.
Padmapper.com
PadMapper plots apartments on a big map, and lets you filter for exactly what you want. There are also neat overlays to help you learn about the different areas.
UC Berkeley Off Campus Housing Facebook group
The UC Berkeley Off-Campus Housing group allows students and landlords to share housing opportunities surrounding the UC Berkeley campus. Oftentimes, students will use this group to share a sublet opportunity for Summer housing. Additionally, local landlords will post their rentals when available.
Zillow
Zillow now offers “Room Rentals” – these can be found by filtering your search under the “Home Type” drop-down menu.
