Thank you for your interest in becoming a mentor. This section of WD&E’s website guides you through the process from requesting an intern to finalizing your intern’s work at the end of the internship. The Mentor Handbook provides additional details on the benefits of mentoring and mentors’ responsibilities.
Only projects listed under the following offices and administrations are fully compliant for support using Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) funds under its CCI, SULI, and/or VFP programs:
- DOE Office of Science
- DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
- DOE Office of Nuclear Energy
- DOE Office of Fossil Energy
- DOE Office of Electricity Delivery and Reliability
- DOE Office of Environmental Management
- National Nuclear Security Administration
There are exceptions. Due to budget constraints, we cannot support interns working on National Institutes of Health (NIH), clinical biology, or medicine projects with WDTS funds.
Spring Internships (Jan – May)
- Application Period: July – October
- Review/Offer Period: mid-October – mid December
- Round 1 (approximately four weeks) allows LBNL mentors to interview and vet applicants who have selected LBNL as their first-choice lab. Contact information of applicants who have selected LBNL as their second-choice lab will not be available to view in WARS until Round 2 opens.
- Round 2 (approximately two weeks). Only second choice labs can make offers to all applicants.
- Round 3 (approximately one week). All labs can make offers to all applicants.
